EMMA JANE DALTON

December 22, 1970 – January 16, 2025

Jane Dalton, 54, of Toronto, Ontario, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at Mississauga Hospital, after her 16-month intensive treatment for an aggressive uterine cancer. She is survived by her husband, Jonathan Beard; her mother, Sarah Dalton-Phillips; her brother, Peter Phillips and his wife, Gina Pieroni; and many loving friends, colleagues, and students.

Jane was born in Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk, England. When she was four years old, Jane came to Canada with her mother. She studied at York University, where she earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology. She was a Clinical Supervisor and Adjunct Faculty member with the York University Clinical Psychology Graduate Program, and in 2016 she opened Roncesvalles Psychology Clinic, which, with its vibrant and warm atmosphere, remains a wonderful reflection of her. Her vision was to create a clinic where everyone felt supported and connected to a team, as she believed relationships formed the foundation of transformation and healing. Thoughtful and sensitive, Jane was a gifted Clinician and Supervisor, and an influential leader who was passionate about mentoring students and helping patients. She had a good sense of humour, once asking a friend if he liked skiing as she gestured toward the roof rack atop his car. He responded in the affirmative but explained it was a bike rack, at which she laughed heartily. In addition to skiing and bicycling, Jane enjoyed running, tennis, and bird watching. She was a talented painter and sketcher; her subject was often birds. She was also a knowledgeable and passionate gardener, and a voracious reader of fiction, enjoying her weekends completing the cryptic crossword. Jane will be greatly missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and community.

She will be cremated and buried at Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto. There is no memorial service scheduled.

Jane was thankful for the oncological and palliative care she received at Trillium Health Partners Credit Valley and Mississauga hospitals. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to: Credit Valley Hospital Cancer Centre Foundation or Cornell Lab of Ornithology or York University Clinical Psychology Graduate Student Teaching Program.
