Larry (Paul Frederic Laurence) Johnston
Died peacefully, after a brief illness at the North York LTC Seniors’ Centre on Sunday. January 10, 2021
Larry was born May 20, 1947, in Wychwood Park, Toronto, attending Hillcrest Public School, the University of Toronto Schools, and Victoria College in the University of Toronto.
Larry was a passionate and gifted writer, with a particular interest for local political and community issues of consequence, having founded and been the chief editor of several monthly publications in York Region prior to retirement. Larry was a Board member for Community Living South York and was an annual float participant in the Thornhill Village Festival. He was well regarded for his dedication and contributions to community causes and reporting.
Larry spent his summers at Lake Rosseau with his family, where he enjoyed spirited days of sailing, barbequing, displaying his remarkable aptitude for trivia and engagement in mutually enthusiastic political “discussion” with his brothers Randal and Jeremy. He was an avid reader, always having a few new books on the go, for quiet nights in front of the fire
Larry loved to watch and listen to professional hockey, baseball, and Canadian football; when asked why he did not care for US football, he would reply he could never understand why the US version needed a 4
th
down. He equally enjoyed attending youth sporting events, in particular hockey games for his son Taylor and nephew Stephen.
Larry was the youngest son of the late John George and Helen Bell Johnston.
He was predeceased by his wife, Wendy, and is mourned by his brothers Jeremy (Stephanie) and Randal (Maridene), and by his son, Taylor Cox, his nephew and godson, Stephen, his niece, Sheila MacNeil (Charles) and grand nephew, Michael and grand niece, Katie.
Larry’s family is thankful to everyone who helped him in recent years. We are particularly grateful for those who were entrusted with his day-to-day care, at the North York Seniors Centre as they displayed empathy and kindness in taking good care of Larry.
A memorial service for Larry will be held later.
Donations may be made in his memory to Victoria University, website www.vicu.utoronto.ca or to Community Living York South 101 Edward Ave., Richmond Hill, ON L4C 5E5
