Ruth Gladys Clarke (née Hunt)
September 27, 1926, to August 15, 2022
Ruth died peacefully in her 96th year at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital after a full and rich life. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest George Clarke, and is survived by her four children: Paul Clarke (Denise), Peggy McKee (Ramsay), Patsy Duffy (Paul) and David Clarke (Sharon). Ruth was the proud grandmother of Becky, Greg and Geoff (Paul and Denise); Hilary and Allan (Peggy and Ramsay); Matthew, Evan, Stephen and Alison (Patsy and Paul); and Kyle and Aaron (David and Sharon). Ruth also leaves behind 16 cherished great-grandchildren, who will forever know her as GG.
Ruth’s unwavering intellectual curiosity led to a life full of adventure and new experiences. After raising her family and a career in research at the Hospital for Sick Children, Ruth lived another full life in retirement. Her interests showed no bounds. She always had a weaving project on the go and at one time had three looms in her home; she delved into the genealogy of her family and Ernie’s family, leaving a legacy for the next generations; she belonged to four book clubs and faithfully read the newspaper every day, keeping up with current events; and she travelled extensively – those who were lucky enough to be on a trip with her know they didn’t need a guidebook because they had Ruth and her knowledge.
Ruth’s favourite place was her cottage of 60 years at Barrow Bay on the Bruce Peninsula, but her greatest happiness came from sharing in the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always showed a keen interest in their lives and education and opened her heart and home to them over the years. They all have special memories of her and will keep them alive for the generations to come. Ruth will be greatly missed by her family near and far and the many friends she made over the years.
In lieu of flowers, Ruth would welcome donations to the Ernest G. Clarke Bursary, awarded to students who have financial need and who live in a Victoria University residence at U of T. To donate, go to the
